Proper care and storage of climbing skins – this is how you can enjoy the summer break

Steigfelle richtig pflegen und aufbewahren – so machen sie die Sommerpause mit

With late spring approaching, the ski touring season is drawing to a close for many. The last firn tours have been completed, the snow is retreating – time to put the gear away. But before the climbing skins simply disappear into the basement, it's worth investing a little time in proper care. Only well-cleaned and correctly stored skins retain their grip and longevity.

In this article, you will learn how to clean, care for, and optimally store your climbing skins step by step.

1. Cleaning the fur side

A simple brushing with a soft brush will remove coarse dirt. Avoid using cleaning agents to remove stains and dirt – these can damage the hide or weaken the bond to the backing material. It's best to treat clean hides with a waterproofing spray before storing them for the summer. Important: Make sure that no waterproofing agent gets onto the adhesive side! While you're at it, check the hide and the fastening elements for damage and repair them if necessary. This will save you trouble at the start of the new season!

2. Care of the adhesive surface

To ensure that the adhesive layer continues to function reliably in the next season, it should be checked and maintained before storage.

Important: depending on the type of adhesive there are different methods:

  • Classic hot melt adhesive: Always store it folded and covered with foil. If the adhesive has already lost its grip, it's best to wait until the start of the new touring season before reapplying it with iron-on transfer tape.
  • Clean skins with hybrid adhesive technology thoroughly with cleaning spray and then store them folded with protective film!

3. Proper storage over the summer

The way the skins are stored has a major impact on their lifespan. Mistakes such as moisture, heat, or improper folding can lead to damage.

You should note this:

  • Only store the skins when they are completely dry and clean.
  • Store in a cool, dark and dry place – ideally in an air-permeable bag or fur sack.
  • Separate the adhesive surfaces with a protective net or backing film; do not place them directly on top of each other.
  • Do not place heavy objects on the skins – this can damage the adhesive.

Conclusion

With a little attention at the end of the season, the lifespan of your climbing skins can be significantly extended. Proper care not only protects the material but also saves time and hassle next winter. If you keep your skins clean, dry, and properly stored over the summer, you'll be able to start the new touring season without any unpleasant surprises when the next snowfall arrives.

And when the first snow has fallen, be sure to clean the ski base before putting the skins back on so that the gripping surfaces don't get dirty again!
